Miles City, Montana – It was here that newcomer, Chester Hartaway, discovered that becoming a cowboy was not quite like he had pictured. Hartaway, a young buck from the deep south, had always dreamed of being a cowboy and riding the range. Having never ridden a horse, he decided to get on the internet and Google his way to ‘cowboy country’…and he did…sort of.
Chester Hartaway, at the tender age of 23, sold most of his belongings, took all his money, hopped in his pick-up truck, and headed west. It was while he was driving one night, after midnight, when the temperature was much cooler for travel, that he heard on his radio about a little town in Montana called Miles City. What a place, he thought. The young man became excited and drove until he absolutely could not drive another mile. Once he found a motel, he rented a room and slept throughout the day, dreaming of horses and wild women. As he closed his eyes, he knew that he was so close to realizing his dream.
After arriving in Miles City, it was obvious he was not a local fellow, but the town folk accepted him and decided they would help him find what he was looking for. After finding a place to stay, he mingled amongst the people and asked questions and such. Finally, he found himself a pretty decent riding horse for about $1200. Before Hartaway actually purchased this horse, he had to learn to ride and how to handle the horse and communicate with it. There was one small issue. Well, actually, there were several. The most pressing issue was the horse had no name. It didn’t like to be ridden, and three, it was lazy, but four, it was cheap.
Long story short, after a lengthy amount of time in learning to ride, he finally took off on his own with this horse. One evening, just about sunset, Chester was riding his horse and something must have spooked the horse, because it took off, full throttle, galloping like the tail was on fire. The horse ran slam through a barn door, and poor Chester was flattened out about 12 feet on the other side of the barn. When he was found, one of the locals asked him what had happened. Chester answered that he didn’t know how to stop that horse because it didn’t have a name. Actually, he asked, “How do you stop a horse with no name?”
The local dude replied, “It’s simple. You whistle, and yell Whoa boy.”
